Turbines and health

One issue which comes up often in our area is that of wind turbines. Often those of us who feel that there are serious problems with this technology have felt that the legislators in Boston have not paid enough attention to the downside of wind energy. Recently an article in this paper by Diane Broncaccio (Monroe gets a windfall from wind farm June 21) mentioned only the monetary advantages which the turbines are giving the town. I was surprised that The Recorder, which has been more even-handed in the past, neglected to report that some residents in Florida and Monroe are very unhappy with the Hoosac turbines. They report loss of property values, diminishing wildlife and in particular very negative health effects. Recently, Larry Lorusso who has the Hoosac turbines for neighbors told me that he feels that the legislators and officials in Boston do not care about those adversely affected by the turbines.
I was therefore very heartened by the news that Rep. Sarah Peake, D-Provincetown, has introduced a bill calling for the establishment of an independent commission to study the health effects of wind turbines.
Based on documented complaints from hundreds of residents living near wind turbines in Falmouth, Fairhaven and many other communities in the commonwealth as peer reviewed studies there is little doubt that wind turbines have negatively affected the health of many families.
So I say “good for you Rep. Peake.”
