Turbine plans on Anglesey rejected

Applause rang out in the council chamber as supporters and opponents of a proposed wind turbine filled the room to hear arguments for and against the development.
Members of the county council’s planning committee voted to oppose plans for a turbine with a tip height of 46m at Tre Ifan in Brynsiencyn.
As the application had been called in for non-determination, councillors could not decide the outcome but only express an opinion.
Christine Pritchard, who spoke against the application at the meeting, said opponents of the plans were not “scaremongering professional protesters” but were concerned about the effect the turbine would have on the landscape, on residents’ health and on tourism.
She said many of those against the plans were in favour of renewable energy but objected to the “intrusive and dominant” turbine’s proximity to Brynsiencyn and the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
“It would be shameful if both sides of the Menai Strait became an area of obliterated natural beauty,” said Ms Pritchard.
She was applauded by members of the public in the chamber.
Applicant Richard Rogers told the committee he was born and raised in Anglesey, has three children, employs three local people and supports other local businesses.
He said many of the objections to wind turbines were “groundless” and that opponents had been “misled and scared by a small and noisy group of people” who he said had mostly moved to the island.
Committee chairman J Arwel Roberts had to intervene when members of the public shouted comments as Mr Rogers spoke.
Cllr Roberts said Ms Pritchard had been allowed to speak without interruption and asked that Mr Rogers be given the same opportunity.
Cllr Roberts’ remarks were applauded.
Mr Rogers asked the council to look “more fairly and objectively” at wind turbine applications by local people.
He said such development was needed to bring investment to the countryside and halt the decline of rural communities.

Hywel Eifion Jones, who addressed the committee as the local councillor, said meetings held by the community council to discuss the application had attracted huge interest.
He said most of the residents at the meetings were against the application.
