UK Small-Scale Wind Survey

Author:  | Technology, U.K.

Report to Department of Energy and Climate Change, May 2009.

This U.K. survey of installed capacity, annual generation, and market growth of wind turbines of up to 100 kW capacity estimated that their output represented 0.01% of total electricity consumption in 2008. Their overall capacity factor (actual generation relative to rated capacity) averaged 6.4%–7.1%, ranging from 0.9% to 13.3%.

In contrast, the British Wind Energy Association assumes a capacity factor of 17% for wind turbines of 1.5–50 kW capacity, and the Renewable Energy Statistics Database project of the DECC had previously (2006) estimated capacity factors ranging from 25% in Wales to 34% in Northern Ireland.
